The photograph everyone comes for is an elephant walking across dusty plains with a snowcapped peak behind it. What almost nobody mentions is that the mountain is in Tanzania, that the park is small, and that the summit spends most of the day wrapped in its own cloud. Kilimanjaro pulls moisture up its flanks as the ground heats, and by mid morning the peak has usually disappeared. It comes back in the last hour of light, sometimes. If you want that photograph, you need to be in position before sunrise, and you need to accept that some mornings simply do not deliver.
