Most national parks let you arrive with a rucksack and decide as you go. This one does not. Every night you sleep inside Torres del Paine has to be reserved in advance, at a named campsite or mountain refuge, and rangers can and do turn back walkers who cannot show a confirmed booking for each stage. The park entry ticket is bought separately and online. Different operators run the accommodation between them, so a multi-day walk means assembling a chain of reservations across separate systems before you ever board a bus, and the popular sites for the southern summer are gone months ahead. It sounds bureaucratic, and it is, but it also means the trails are not trampled, the refuges are not overrun and the wilderness at the far end of South America still feels like wilderness.
The reward for all that admin is one of the great walking landscapes anywhere: granite towers rising straight out of the steppe, a glacier calving into a milky lake, guanaco grazing under condors, and the pumas that have made this the most reliable place on earth to look for one. Two routes carry almost everyone. The W trek traces three valleys in a rough letter shape over four or five days, taking in the towers, the French valley and the glacier, while the full circuit adds the remote back side of the massif and a high pass, closer to a week and a half. It pays to compare flights and hotel prices for Patagonia and to book the beds first, because the reservations decide the itinerary rather than the other way round.
Where you sleep divides sharply between inside and outside. Inside the park, mountain refuges on the trekking routes offer bunk rooms and meals below the base of the towers, in the French valley and beside Grey Glacier, all of them booked through their operators. Also inside, designated campsites with platforms and shelters sit beside the same refuges, with tents and sleeping bags available to rent for those flying in light. At the park entrances there are hotels and lodges on the estancia land around the Laguna Amarga gate and beside Lake Pehoé, comfortable bases for day walking. In Puerto Natales, roughly two hours away by road, there are hostels, guesthouses and small hotels near the waterfront on Última Esperanza Sound, where nearly every trip is assembled and every gear shop sits.
Not everyone needs to walk for days, and this is a hire car destination that happens to work perfectly well without one. Day visitors drive or bus in for the road viewpoints, the boat trip towards the glacier face and the short trail to a waterfall, and see a great deal carrying nothing. Buses run daily from Puerto Natales to the entrances, a catamaran crosses the lake to reach the western trailheads that have no road behind them, and shuttles connect the gates to the trail starts. A car buys freedom for the outer roads and the early starts, but there is no fuel inside the park, so fill up before you go. Most Chile travel to the far south connects through Santiago and then Punta Arenas, with the road running north from there, and the alternative is the long bus over the border from Argentina. Entry is visa-free for a short stay on many passports and needs a visa on others, every arrival has to file the agricultural and customs affidavit online shortly before landing, since undeclared food is fined, and accounts differ over whether a further pre-travel form now applies, so check the official Chilean pages for your own nationality before you fly. Keep the migration card handed over at the border, because foreign visitors have been exempt from the hotel sales tax when they present it with the passport. It costs nothing to check car rental and lodge prices for Puerto Natales, and reserve well ahead for the southern summer, when the whole region fills at once.
The season runs from spring through to early autumn. Midsummer brings the longest days and the most stable temperatures along with the biggest crowds and the fiercest wind, which in Patagonia is a genuine force rather than a detail, strong enough to knock a walker off balance on exposed ground. Spring and autumn are quieter, cooler and calmer, with autumn adding colour on the beech forest, and winter closes much of the circuit while shorter guided trips continue. Fires are strictly forbidden anywhere in the park after past disasters started by visitors, cooking is confined to designated shelters, and this is enforced. Personally, I would take the shoulder season and the shorter route over a rushed midsummer attempt at the full circuit, and spend the days I saved looking for a puma at dawn.

A: Midsummer for long days and warmth, at the price of crowds and severe wind. Spring and autumn are calmer and quieter, with autumn colour on the forest. Winter limits access to shorter guided outings, and the wind can blow hard in any month, so pack for it whatever the calendar says.
