Three canyons are sold under one name, and only two are the national park. The West Rim, with the glass walkway of the Grand Canyon Skywalk, sits on Hualapai tribal land, charges its own admission and is nearer Las Vegas, which is why the coaches go there rather than because the view is better. Inside the park the two Grand Canyon rims are barely the same place: the south side is open through the year, holds the classic viewpoints, the visitor centre and a free shuttle network, and absorbs almost all the crowds, while the north side sits higher, opens only in the warm months, takes a longer drive and rewards it with a fraction of the people. This year the north side has also lost most of what made it comfortable.
Before either rim, the money, which changed at the start of this year and catches foreign visitors out. Entry is still charged per vehicle for a week, but every visitor who is not a United States resident, aged sixteen and over, now pays a surcharge of a hundred dollars a head on top, at a listed group of the best known parks that includes this one. A family from abroad can therefore find the park costs more than the coach tour that never enters it. There is a non resident version of the annual national parks pass, and the sources disagree about it in a way that matters: the park service's own fee pages present it as covering entry at these sites, while several independent guides state plainly that it does not remove the surcharge, and add that fee free days now apply only to citizens and permanent residents. Where you sleep decides your sunrise, and grand canyon lodging now divides four ways rather than the old five. Grand Canyon Village keeps historic lodges on the South Rim a short walk from Mather Point, the only beds close enough to reach the edge before dawn, and they fill months ahead. Tusayan sits just outside the south entrance with chain hotels along the highway and far easier availability. Williams has motels and small inns along the old route through town, gentler on the budget and the park railway terminus. And the north side has no lodging at all this season: the historic lodge burned and has since been demolished, rebuilding has not been settled, and the reopened campground is the only place to sleep up there.
Treat this as a self drive trip: the rims are hours apart and nothing public connects them, so the hire car is the itinerary and gets booked with the flights. On the north side, plan for a stripped season rather than a normal one. There is no drinking water, so carry it in or buy it at the general store; fuel is pay at the pump and shuts off earlier than the road does; Cape Royal Road and Point Imperial are open while the Bright Angel Point and Widforss trails are not. The corridor into the canyon is the part to check yourself, since the park's own status page lists the North Kaibab route down to Phantom Ranch as closed with the inner canyon bridges out of use, while some guides describe the trail as open on foot, and a rim to rim plan cannot rest on the optimistic version. Wherever you walk, the rangers' line holds: going down is optional, coming up is mandatory, the climb out takes about twice as long on tired legs, and the floor bakes while the rim stays mild, so turn back at a third of your energy rather than half. On the South Rim, Hermit Road closes to private cars in the busy months and the shuttle is the only way along it. Season decides which half of the park exists at all. Summer brings the heat, the crowds and the full range of services, with the inner canyon dangerous in the middle of the day.
