Rental vehicles are scarce and fuel supply is unreliable, so most visitors rely on long-distance coaches, shared taxis, a private driver or the short domestic flights between the main cities, and a transfer arranged in advance saves an argument on arrival. Guided walks, dance and cooking classes and meals in private restaurants are not only the best of Cuba, they are also what an authorised, people-focused itinerary looks like on paper: American travellers cannot come as ordinary tourists, must fit the trip to one of their government's permitted categories, and are expected to keep the schedule and the receipts for years afterwards. The dry winter and spring months are the comfortable ones and the busiest, summer is hot and humid, and late summer into autumn falls inside the Atlantic hurricane season.
