The standard visit is a squeezed half day between Naples and the Amalfi coast, arriving at noon, walking the first few streets inside the gate, photographing a plaster cast, leaving hot and vaguely disappointed. That is not the site's fault. This is an entire Roman town, streets and shops and painted houses across an area you could not cross twice in an afternoon, thinly signposted and without much shade. The difference between an exhausting blur and one of the best days in Italy is almost entirely a matter of how long you give it and whether somebody is explaining what you are looking at. Restoration and excavation never stop here, so a particular house may also be closed on the day you come, which is another argument for time rather than a tight schedule.
Tickets have become the part that catches people out. Entry is capped at twenty thousand visitors a day, tickets carry the buyer's name and are checked against matching photo identification at the gate, and through the warm half of the year entry is split into timed bands with most admissions released for the morning and a much smaller share for the afternoon. A ticket allows one entry only, so leaving for lunch means not coming back. Official sales moved to a new platform this year, which has left a crop of lookalike resale sites charging well above the gate rate, so start from the archaeological park's own website. Arriving travellers from outside Europe should also expect the newer border routine, fingerprints and a photo instead of a stamp, with the separate online authorisation for visa free visitors still moving its start date. Four bases work, and they suit different trips. Naples has hotels and apartments throughout the old centre around Spaccanapoli, noisy and magnificent, with the archaeological museum holding the mosaics and frescoes taken from the site. Sorrento has resort hotels and guesthouses on the cliffs above Marina Grande, calmer and more expensive, and the end of the same commuter line. Pompei town has modest hotels and family guesthouses around the Sanctuary of the Madonna, minutes from the ruins and by far the easiest place to be at opening time. Ercolano has small guesthouses and rooms along Corso Resina, right beside the Herculaneum excavations and handy for the volcano road.
Getting around is simpler than it looks, with one catch. The commuter railway between Naples and Sorrento stops at Pompei Scavi, opposite the main gate, and at Ercolano Scavi for Herculaneum, which makes the whole triangle doable without a car; the catch is that those trains are crowded, hot and unreliable in summer, and a private transfer is worth the money on the day you have a timed ticket to honour. The national railway serves the modern town instead, a short walk from the quieter amphitheatre gate. For the site itself, a licensed guide or a good audio guide turns rubble into a town, and guided groups also reach some areas that are otherwise easier to miss. Mount Vesuvius needs its own advance planning: the crater path is sold online only, in timed slots, with no ticket office at the top, and buses run up from both Pompei and Ercolano. Season decides comfort more than anything else. Summer means heat with no shade, cruise groups and the fullest morning band, so an early slot is not optional. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot, with long light and bearable temperatures. Winter brings short hours, a closing time in mid afternoon and, on the better days, an almost empty forum. Whenever you come, bring water, a hat and shoes that survive ancient paving, because the streets are rutted stone and the ruts are the original cart tracks. Personally, I would sleep in Pompei town the night before, take the first entry of the morning with a guide for the first couple of hours, then wander alone until the heat wins, and keep Herculaneum for a separate day rather than stapling it onto this one.
