Two decisions taken centuries apart gave this place its shape. The first was to lay the old centre inside Vallgraven, the defensive moat, on a grid of straight canals drawn up by engineers brought over from the Netherlands. The second was a building rule that capped wooden houses at two storeys, and the local answer to it: the landshövdingehus, a hybrid with stone on the ground floor and two wooden storeys above. Whole districts went up that way, and Haga, Linné and Majorna are still largely made of it.
Trains from Stockholm take a few hours, ferries arrive from Frederikshavn in Denmark and Kiel in Germany, and Landvetter airport sits east of the city with no rail or tram link at all, so the airport coach into the Nils Ericson terminal beside the central station is the standard way in. Room prices run below Stockholm, which is much of the appeal, though summer weeks and the Christmas season at Liseberg tighten availability. It is worth a moment to compare flights and hotels for Gothenburg before you settle on dates.
Entry is the part travellers now get wrong most often. Sweden is in the Schengen area, so short stays for visitors from outside the European Union are capped at ninety days within any rolling period of half a year, and passports are no longer stamped by hand. The Entry and Exit System records non-European arrivals digitally instead, taking fingerprints and a facial image at the first crossing. A separate online travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors has been announced and postponed more than once, so check the official European Union page rather than a commercial lookalike. Sweden uses the krona and not the euro, and many places take cards only.
The city pass deserves a second look. The Gothenburg card sold today is a sightseeing product, not the old municipal card: public transport is no longer part of it, and Liseberg is neither included nor discounted, which catches out anyone reading an older guide. Confirm the current inclusions before buying. What you want for a short stay is a Västtrafik ticket, because the whole city, the river ferries and the southern archipelago boats sit inside a single zone, so one ordinary ticket carries you by tram, bus and boat.
Where you sleep barely changes your walking distance, only the atmosphere. Inside Vallgraven, mid-range and historic hotels line the canal around Gustaf Adolfs Torg, which puts the old centre on foot. Around Kungsportsavenyn in Lorensberg, business and design hotels stand below the art museum at Götaplatsen. In Haga and Linné, guesthouses and apartment rentals fill the wooden streets behind Haga Nygata. Out west in Majorna, quieter apartments and small hotels put you on the tram line running down to Saltholmen and the archipelago boats.
A hire car is the one thing you can safely leave out. Nothing you will want to see needs one, the islands ban them outright, and parking by the ferry terminal is scarce, so a private transfer or a seat on the coach covers your arrival and the tram and the boat cover the rest. Ferries to the southern archipelago run all year from Saltholmen, with a few slower sailings leaving straight from Stenpiren, and bicycles come aboard when there is room. The islands are car-free granite, red boathouses and footpaths. Beyond that, a booked shellfish safari or a guided day trip north into Bohuslän fills a second day, and you can check day trips and transfers for the West Sweden coast before you commit.
Season decides how much of this works. Summer brings long daylight and a full ferry timetable, and late spring and early autumn are quieter with the boats still running. From the middle of November the city hands itself over to Christmas at Liseberg, the largest Christmas market in the country, which runs on selected dates rather than continuously and closes over Christmas itself, so check the calendar first. Whenever you come, take the coffee seriously, because fika here is a daily ritual rather than a snack, and Haga with its oversized cinnamon buns is where most visitors meet it. Feskekôrka, the fish market hall built to look like a church, has reopened, though the fish counters keep shorter hours than the restaurants under the same roof. Bring a coat whatever the forecast says, because the rain here arrives sideways. Personally, I would give one island a whole day rather than hop across three, and let the ferry timetable set the pace.
